Making Money Online

One of the most common questions we receive from clients is: Can I make money on the Internet? And the answer is, possibly.

I personally don't believe that there are any "get rich quick" schemes that really work, but there are definitely lots of people who have built up successful and profitable online businesses. One of the keys is to build up multiple revenue streams from a number of different sources. Some of the hottest online money making systems on the web are:

Millions of people make their income out of web related activities such as website advertising or selling on e-bay. However, the internet gold-rush of the late 90's came to an end around the turn of the millennium. Hundreds of 'dot-com' companies vanished almost as quickly as they had emerged.

Today, things have settled down and investors are no longer prepared to back any scheme just because it has the word 'Internet' attached to it. But there are still many ways to try to make some money online. Lots of people are now full time traders on the e-bay auction site, and thanks to automatic ad systems like Google's adsense.

However, unless your site is getting some serious traffic, don't expect to earn a lot from this revenue stream. Sites which are set-up solely to tap into the adsense project will rarely succeed.

Affiliate schemes are another common route that people use to try to make money online. Unlike the google adsense approach, where the 'publisher' gets paid every time someone clicks on an advertisement, with the affiliate scheme, you only actually get paid when someone CLICKS on a link and THEN goes on to make a purchase. Let's say for example, Mike sets up a website which helps consumers to find the best deals for broadband. When a visitor comes to the site, clicks on a link through to the affiliate site (e.g. Rogers Cable) and then goes on to order broadband services, Rogers will then pay Mike a generous commission fee.

Make Money with Google Adsense

Google adsense is the 'publisher' side of the google ad words advertising system that has seen google become THE most successful internet company EVER. Most people know what google do, but very few people actually understand how google makes its money, and what pay per click is all about.

The answer is very simple. When you do a search on google, you will find the search results are usually broken into three distinctive areas:

  • The first couple of search results appear in a shaded colour (sponsored links)
  • The remaining search results are regular google listings ('natural results')
  • On the right hand side there is usually another row of search results (sponsored links)

Those two blocks of sponsored links are what make google the richest and most profitable internet company on the earth. Sponsored Links are 'paid listings'. They are there because the owner of the website wants to get visitors to their website, and they are prepared to pay for this.

So for example, suppose I sell collectable dolls and I have a website all about dolls. I want to get traffic to my website, and I am particularly interested in people who happen to be searching using the keywords 'collectable dolls'. I set-up an account with google and specify how I want my ad to look and how much I am prepared to pay for each visitor (pay per click). Once the account is up and running, anytime someone searches for 'collectable dolls', my ad will appear either in the top results, or down the right hand side.

Google Ad words are based on an open market system with the company prepared to pay the most money being pushed higher up the lists. If you are going for a very competitive area but are not prepared to pay very much, then there is a chance that your adverts will never show up.

Google charges the advertiser each and every time someone clicks on one of these sponsored adverts, and that is how they make most of their money.

Google Adsense - widening the market

So now that you understand how Google works, its time to take a look at how you can get in on this action! Google pretty soon realized that whilst the majority of people start their search on the search engine page, they quickly go on to look at other web pages such as informational web pages (such as this one for example) These pages are not owned by google, but google would still like to have the opportunity to display adverts that may be of interest to the readers.

So Google setup the system called 'Google Adsense' which basically allows website publishers to provide a platform on which google can display its adverts. The publisher inserts a piece of code where they want their advert to appear, google then visits the page and figures out what the page is all about, and from that, they are able to select which adverts in their inventory would be suitable for them to display. And each time one of these adverts gets clicked on, google charges the advertiser and passes on a percentage of the cost to the publisher.

So if you have a passion for a particular topic and you have some basic web skills, you could create a website (or even a blog) all about your chosen subject, then sign up to google adsense and start displaying the ads.

Make Money with Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate Marketing is a popular method of promoting goods and services on websites which are relevant to the topic of the website. However, whilst google adsense provides a relatively passive way of displaying adverts (where google automatically figures out what the site is about and displays relevant adverts) with affiliate marketing, the web publisher needs to set-up relevant links to affiliates that have a particular product or service to promote.

Affiliate marketing can work well for niche products, but it is also used for generic consumer products. For example, visit a website that contains information about your favorite author and you are likely to be presented with an advertisement from a book seller promoting the authors latest work. This is affiliate marketing at work.

Although some of the bigger players such as Amazon operate their own affiliate marketing programs, for most companies, the easiest option is to use a third party intermediary such as commissionjunction.com or tradedoubler.com. These sites are basically middlemen between website publishers and advertisers. Web publishers can sign-up and access details of all the different affiliate programs that the intermediary have in their inventory.

Make Money Completing Online Surveys

Business spends billions of dollars every year trying to convince consumers to buy their products and services. And although the major expense is in advertising, a lot of money is also spent on market research. For business to succeed, it is vital that they know how consumers think and act, what makes them tick, what makes them select one brand over another, what factors influence their purchasing decisions, what would it take to make them spend more etc. Understanding these factors helps companies to get a better handle on their market and ultimately, helps to improve profitability.

The internet provides a perfect platform for companies to conduct just such research - the old method of hassling people in shopping centers is a lot more resource intensive, and is much less likely to be a convenient time for the interviewer. By contrast, with online surveys, the interviewer can conduct the survey at their own pace, at a time that suits them, and n the comfort of their own home - and what's more, they don't need another person there to ask the questions.

An additional benefit is that the data can automatically be submitted an analyzed, compared to the old method whereby the marketing information needed to be transcribed onto a computer system after the survey has taken place.

So for all these reasons, online surveys are definitely big business - and the market is only going to get bigger over time. This might come as quite a surprise - but there are currently estimated to be over 8 million companies worldwide that actively survey consumers to find the best way to promote their products.

The amount of money you can make taking online a survey is largely dependent on the amount of surveys you take, and the time you have to take them. Most average from 5 minutes to half an hour and the average payout is a few dollars - so whilst completing online surveys may help boost your income, it is unlikely to make you rich in a hurry!

Make Money with Drop Shipping

Drop shipment or drop shipping is a type of retailing where the retailer does not keep goods in stock, but instead passes the customer's order and shipment details to the wholesaler, who then dispatches the goods to the customer directly. The retailer makes their profit on the difference between the wholesale and retail price.

Drop shipping can be a very simple and effective way to get started in ecommerce. Many online merchants find drop shipping strategies are good way of minimizing stock holding, decreasing overall shipping costs and cutting down on delivery times to customers.

The drop shipping model allows web site owners to send single or low quantity unit orders gathered on their web sites to manufacturers, or wholesale warehouses, who in turn ship the items directly to the customers of the web site owner. Typically you take care of the promotion and collect the payment, and the drop shipper looks after order fulfillment. With drop shipping, there is no capital investment, no need to invest in stock and no danger of you suddenly having large stocks you are unable to sell.

So how do I get started?

If you are interested in drop shipping and you have a passion for a particular product area which lends itself to selling on the internet, then the best thing to do is to research what products are available from the big players. You can always contact wholesalers directly asking them if they operate a drop shipping program. You can usually find details by searching on the internet. Searching for the terms "drop shipping" or "drop ship" along with your area of interest usually gives pretty good results.

Drop shipping will be particularly suitable to people who have a certain degree of commercial acumen and who have the technical and web skills to develop an e-commerce website and get it promoted effectively in the search engines.
